A Poll-try Effort

I realise it’s been a while since I’ve posted any writerly insights here, so I’ve resolved to find some time to rectify that. Riding the last waves of the UK General Election vibe, I thought I’d leave it up to you lot to tell me what you’re most interested in reading about (plus I haven’t used the poll feature in more than a year and it’s getting dusty).

So, would-be writers and fans alike, what would you like to know more about?

Behind-the-scenes: The less glamourous aspects of being a career writer, such as planning, editing, feedback, marketing and so on.

Creativity: How to use and abuse archetypes, create characters and plot, expand themes, develop settings and that sort of stuff.

Craft: Actual writing technique, turning ideas into words, creating scenes and the use of language.

Presenting ideas: The processes of synopsis creation, pitching ideas, finding creative space and establishing author identity.

Feel free to post other suggestions in the comments.

  1. Umm, all of the above?

I’ve gone for craft, since there are times when I feel I’m bashing my head against a wall of my own making, and some Gav-esque knowledge could be just the ticket 🙂

Many continuing thanks for the outpourings of advice you provide us, your loyal minions, with.

Just FYI, I read every post even if I don’t always comment, it’s always a pleasure.

  3. The process behind presenting ideas would be interesting to learn. Normally other writers just give a general description of coming up with an idea and pitching it to the editors and hoping that they they approve, or being approached about doing a unique book. It would be nice to learn something about the process in general and particularly that of Black Library as opposed to the current “writing conversations” put out by BL, consisting of their current authors patting each other on the back.

  4. I think creative tips would be the most beneficial to hobby/amateur writers like myself. The process of constructing ideas into words is somewhat inherit once a good/unique idea presents itself. The inspiration of a new character or well-developed idea tends to fuel the “crafting” process and the rest is just editing.
